The Village remains on evacuation order. BC Wildfire Service first responders recently had to facilitate extracting someone from an Evacuation Order area when fire activity hindered their ability to leave and posed an immediate threat to them.
Evacuation Orders are issued to protect both the community and emergency responders in situations where there’s a significant danger. These orders are not just for the safety of those in the affected zones but also for the firefighters and other personnel working to control the situation.
Receiving an Evacuation Order can be an unsettling and emotional experience. Evacuating a home is a difficult and emotional experience, and we understand that people may be reluctant to do so. However, choosing to remain in an area that is under an Evacuation Order puts yourself, your family and first responders in danger. It’s not worth the risk.
People who remain in an area that’s under an Evacuation Order may impede the ability of crews, as they may be pulled away from priority work to keep you out of harm’s way. While the evacuation order remains, work is actively underway to restore essential services.
Within the Village, damage assessments are continuing and affected property owners are currently being contacted as information becomes available. We know that Kings Lake Cemetery has experienced some impacts, including downed trees. Additional assessments will be completed in the coming days to better understand the extent of the damage and any work that may be required.
We understand many residents are eager to see services restored, including the water system. Water testing is currently underway in coordination with Interior Health. Before the system can be safely restarted, staff need to confirm that any contaminants present will not damage water infrastructure or treatment equipment. To support this work, staff are collaborating closely with Interior Health and the water treatment plant manufacturer to assess the system and determine the safest path forward. The Village remains under a Boil Water Advisory at this time.
